Saya & Shin

Saya and Shin were always together. It was expected of the twins. However, while Shin was very good at sports and at studying, Saya loved the arts. She was considered to be an excellent painter and pianist. The twins grew up in Suita with only their mother, after their father died in a traffic accident when they were 5 years old. Though it was difficult raising them without a father, their mother did her very best to give them a good quality of life. She worked two jobs in order to provide for their basic needs, and has always managed to spend time with them. Mrs. Tegoshi would always hear wonderful things about her twins, and how good of a mother she was. She took pride in knowing Saya and Shin had good principles and always cared for each other. She insisted on learning all she could about them, so she could understand the kind of goals each wanted to achieve for themselves. Shin studied very hard in school so that he could enter Osaka Gakuin University, while Saya thought it was good enough to find a job and give back to their mother. Though she enjoyed painting and playing the piano, Saya had no intention of pursuing either. She decided to attend whatever college would accept her because her grades were not as impressive as Shin's.

Shin was the popular one at Kita Senri High School. He was the representative of class 3-A, and a member of the sports club. He had piercing dark eyes, muscular built, and shiny hair with brown highlights that attracted everyone wearing a skirt, and even some pants as well. Girls would constantly beg Saya to pass on gifts and love letters to her gorgeous brother. However, she never complained. In fact, Saya found it somewhat sweet that they admired her brother that much and spoke so highly of him. And though she didn't have as many friends as Shin, she did have a few nonetheless. Saya wasn't in the same class as Shin and often times her classmates would make a fuss about it. They'd make comments like "Saya, your level of knowledge is lower than your twin brother's. He's obviously the "smart" one since you're in class 3-C." Still, such negative remarks had no impact on Saya; she found it quite irrelevant and paid no attention to rumors. Her friends were also very cheerful and always kept her smiling.

After school, the twins would wait for each other. If Shin had club activities Saya would wait around until he was finished. They'd often stop at the takoyaki stand for a quick snack before dinner, and always made sure to get some for their mother. While on their way home, they spoke about everything that took place that day. They were very comfortable talking with each other and always genuinely listened to whatever the other had to say. Shin would ask how Saya was feeling about what people said about her not being smart, and if he could help her improve in her studies. Saya mostly asked how he was doing and how prepared he was for the entrance exam, which was in a few weeks. She told him not to pay any mind to the rumors and to just concentrate on his on passing.

"But what about you nee-chan, aren't you taking any entrance exams?" he asked worriedly.

"I've decided to attend Suita Junior College for now" she answered.

"What! if that's the case then let's study hard and enter Osaka Gakuin together." He replied.

Saya had a puzzled look on her face. Why her brother would think she was even capable of getting accepted by Osaka Gakuin made her clueless, and she thought it was completely ridiculous and impossible.

"don't give me that look, Saya. Let's study hard together and pass the exam. If you put a lot of effort into it, you could even get a scholarship then mama won't have to worry at all about expenses. She could finally get some rest and wouldn't have to work two jobs."

Saya was impressed by her brother's thoughtful nature. It's definitely a good plan, and she was willing to do anything for her mother.

"Let's do it!" She shouted. "Let's go to Gakuin together!"

They barely made it through the door before rushing off to prepare dinner and get to studying. It was hard enough for their mother to work all day and then come home and not have dinner made. This was all they could do for now, as high school students aren't allowed to work part-time jobs. Mama made sure of it. "Just concentrate on school," she would say. "Don't be like some of these kids; working as hostesses, doing illegal stuff and getting in trouble. My twins will be great in life." Mama was always so encouraging when she spoke and everyone loved her for that. She couldn't help but notice how Saya became more adamant about studying.

"Take your time and eat. The book's not running away, Saya."

"Mama, I have to study these tonight. Shin made notes of what I should go over and make sure to ask if I don't understand. He thinks I can pass the exam and get into Gakuin with him. Do you think I can do it, Mama?"

Saya gave her mother a look of fear, as if she had no confident whatsoever in herself to even consider taking the exam.

"Saya-chan, you can do anything if you work hard at it." Mama replied cheerfully.

"That's what I keep telling her, mama." Shin chimes in. He's more convinced than any other that his sister will get in, and even more convinced that he's already there.
